I am an 8th grade math teacher in Massachusetts. I teach an accelerated class that covers 8th grade standards as well as Algebra I standards. I also teach an inclusion class with a variety of students with special needs and ELL.
This activity is designed to be used to get students to see for themselves how to represent horizontal and vertical lines as equations and other representations. It is designed so that kids will use the cards alongside the handout that will guide them to this underdstnding. You won’t have to say a word! Includes: Card Sort with tables, graphs, equations and descriptions of horizontal (zero slope) and vertical (undefined slope) linesGuided handout that questions students and allows them to figu
This graphic organizer helps students solve for the x and y intercepts algebraically. It could be used as a graphic organizer or cut out and put in an interactive notebook. It is cross shaped which is a good visual for students (x and y axis). I have included an example of how to use the organizer as well. Enjoy :)
This 2 column graphic organizer helps students write linear equations in slope-intercept form given a situation. It is especially helpful for students that struggle with math and breaking down problems on their own.
I use this activity to have students practice finding slope from 2 points and writing y=mx +b equations from 2 points. Both versions are included. Kids are able to self-check with a partner. Encourages great discussions about problems. Kids LOVE row games. I have included an optional recording sheet for kids to show their work if you choose and answer keys for both sheets.
I believe that students need the opportunity to interact with math in a variety of different ways. Computation is important, but writing and analyzing the “why” behind the process really makes things stick. I use this after students have had some time to work through a number of problems converting to y=mx +b. It can be used as classwork, homework and/or a mini assessment. Page 5-6 includes a possible response your however individual students may respond differently.
