Celebrating the art of artist John Mitchell this middle school lesson plan invites students to explore the history of shotgun houses, photograph textures, play with exploding watercolor paints, and create a collage based on home.

The transition from the the end of the summer into the new school year is celebrated by using flip flops as the object of our first drawing assignment. The element of color is used to incorporate emphasis as a design principle. This lesson has 12 color and 12 black and white flip flop compositions which can be used in place of taking your own photographs. You can also use the black and white prints as handouts which the students can color with markers or colored pencils.
