Sub Behavior Reflection

As a middle school teacher, I used to dread taking days off. After continuously getting reports of bad/disrespectful behavior from substitutes, I knew I had to do something. I came up with a letter writing assignment. Students reflect on the previous day(s) by writing letters to the substitute, their parents/guardians, and my building principal. Once a class has to complete this assignment, the next time you are out, you won't have to worry! The letters teach accountability because it's assigne

Context Clues Escape Room

Students love escape rooms. Plain and simple. In this escape room, students will need to use context clue to discover the meaning of words. Through three challenging tasks, students learn new words while working in a team. All of the tasks ask students identify a word by reading a sentence or passage. In my 6th grade ELA classes, this escape room took about 45 minutes to complete. Perfect for a Friday wrap up or to prepare for a reading unit.

Math Test Corrections Form

The Math Corrections form is a great way to get students to reflect on their assessments! I give this to any student who did not get a 100% which helps take away the stigma of needing to make corrections. I do not give class time for corrections so it also encourages responsibility. The form encourages students to think about why they made a mistake and gives them an opportunity to fix small mistakes they should've caught.

Google Classroom Turtle Mystery Picture - Adding Decimals

My students love the mystery pictures! Many of my students are not patient enough to actually color mystery pictures, so I made it more interactive. Students will answer decimal addition expressions, if they have the right answer then a mystery picture will begin to appear. Correct answers auto-populate certain colors to be filled in on the picture side. The Google Sheet is very easy to use and will be fun for all!

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching in Ohio for 8 years. My license is 4th-9th grade Math and ELA (I've taught a little of both over the years!). I also have a K-12 Reading Endorsement and a 4-6 Generalist. I currently teach enriched classes which consist of gifted and/or high achieving students.

Teaching style

In my classroom, I focus on leading students through independent/group learning. Since I teach middle level, I focus on guided independence to help my kids transition from elementary to high school. I like students to work together using project-based learning. I do more "floating" than lecturing. My classes have a wide variety of ability levels, so I feel I can reach more students by purposeful wandering.

Awards & shining teacher moments

- Passed all parts of RESA (on my first try!! :)) - 30 hours of Gifted Instruction training - ELA Teacher of the Year Award for my school (2017-18)

My own education history

I went to Mount Vernon Nazarene University for my undergraduate

Additional biographical information

In addition to teaching, I have coached girls volleyball and basketball. Coaching is such an amazing experience and definitely has made me a better teacher. I also tutor students 3-4 times a week. I focus on reading, writing, and math.
