iready data wall

I created a card to help my students track their progress of the 3 iready diagnostic assessments. Their diagnostic score was written on a card and then put it on the wall. On the wall I had the scores students should be meeting for math and ELA and the score card was on a wall background according to their level. See the downloadable preview for more visuals. It really helped my students challenge themselves and take the program more seriously. See these other iready related products: iready

The True Story of The Three Little Pigs (CCSS RL 1 Citing Textual Evidence)

This is a lesson on citing textual evidence based on the twist to the original story "The Three Little Pigs" which children love; The twist to the original story is called, "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" by Jon Scieszka. Upper grade students love it because they often had never previously heard the "untold version" or they had but they love to read it again. It's perfect for middle school students since they love to judge and make their own opinions on EVERYTHING. It is a lesson mad

Sorry Wrong Number Citing Textual Evidence & Movie Comparison

This product is based on the play "Sorry Wrong Number" by Lucile Fletcher. I got the text from the HMH Collections Textbook, but the play can be found in several places online. My 7th grade students really enjoyed the play perspective and took turns being a character. We cited textual evidence (RI 7.1) since it is the most hit standard on the SBAC. For fun we watched the movie on amazon and we were able to enjoy a black and white film for old times sake. They were all so shocked how fun the

Detention Slips English and Spanish

I made this last year when I realized my students needed an official looking document to realize they had detention. It also serves as a communication tool for parents and gives them awareness of what is going on in the classroom. It is hard to keep up with 150+ students (I work in a middle school) so this has saved a lot of time. I uploaded the pages that do not have a watermark, but in the preview you can see our school mascot as a watermark to make it look official. This is on a word doc

Monthly Reading Log

This is a reading log for middle school students. I often struggle with so much paperwork in middle school so I reduced the weekly reading log to a monthly one so that it is easy to put in the gradebook. Because I uploaded a PDF it will be hard to edit that version so the third page contains a link to the google doc file so you can make a copy of it and edit as needed. It will however require a gmail account. If you want it in a word file please email me and I will email it right back to you

Saving The Lost By: Reynaldo Vasquez Article & Activities (Collections 2 HMH G7)

This is an original lesson that I created from the article "Saving the Lost" By Reynaldo Vasquez. The questions stems were from SBAC so that students would be prepared to answer questions similar to that style. I found the article in the 7th grade Collections textbook reader by HMH. The lessons are heavily focused on the standard that shows up the most on the SBAC: Citing Textual Evidence. There are also multiple ways to practice the same standard, quizzes, group work, and also Greek and Latin

This is a one page document I created to make a conference with my students and help them see their scores from the SBAC, AR & Lexile reading level, quarterly grades, GPA and iready. You may modify to suit specific tests your school has. This is powerful when used consistently. It humanizes their data for them and makes it tangible. Additionally, students love seeing their progress.

The assignment asks students to compare George & Lennie from the Steinbeck novel "Of Mice & Men". The assignment focus is from chapter 1, but it can be used at any point of the novel. Students should read chapter 1 and write down the comparison of the two main characters. There is a T-chart to compare the characters and then a paragraph requirement afterwards with transitional signal phrases for comparing and contrasting the characters. Answer keys are included.

Additional biographical information

I am currently teaching in a rural area. I teach 6th grade at my old middle school, it is a Title 1 school with low test scores and high levels of poverty (free breakfast and lunch for all). The students are very low academically and have little access to the world. I used to sit where my students now sit and my goal is to help them see the world and have access to it no matter how limited their resources are.
