About the store
My first pride and joy is being the mother of two wonderful children. My husband Ben is a middle school science teacher and I currently teach second grade. I have been teaching since 2004. My first eight years I taught kindergarten. I have been teaching second grade since.
I have always had a passion with curriculum. I graduated from Michigan State University with degrees in elementary education K-8, language arts, and a ZA endorsement for Child Development. I received my masters in Curriculum and Development from Michigan State University in 2007. Since then, I have worked for my county to create kindergarten reading units with lessons and in math for my school district. I helped to create our Kindergarten assessments for our district about 8 years ago.
I've been teaching second grade since 2012. My second grade team and I started to use Engage New York, which is a free online math program. I can say that we were not able to do the entire lesson each day, due to lack of instructional time. In the process, I discovered how to identify the critical teaching points and use them in my instruction.
My most current venture has been working for my district to align our math curriculum K-5. I have led professional development in my elementary building on the importance of power standards and how to use them when teaching. We just finalized the power standards for our district and creating I CAN statements for our teacher to use in May of 2017. I am currently working on creating scales for our second grade math standards.

Students record the daily weather in my 2nd grade classroom using these graphs. The 2nd grade graphing standards include pictographs, bar graphs and line plots. I incorporate these graphs into my calendar routine. I switch them up each month and come back to the graphs that students find most challenging.

Teaching style
I believe that teaching students curriculum involves student interest, using research based curriculum, and a mix of direct instruction and hands on learning.
Awards & shining teacher moments
All of the math assessments in my Common Core Second Grade Math Packet have been tested with real students in four classrooms for four years. By using teacher and student feedback, I have revised these assessments to make them better.
I have read many math instruction books like Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics: Developmentally Appropriate Instruction for Grades Pre-K-2 by John Van de Walle, LouAnn Lovin, Karen Karp, and Jennifer Bay-Williams, Math Exchanges: Guiding Young Mathematicians in Small Group Meetings by Kassia Omohundro Wedekind, and Math Work Stations: Independent Learning You Can Count On, K-2 by Debbie Diller. These books have been instrumental in my teaching and curriculum development.
