We use this chart to introduce the properties of addition and multiplication. We use the phrases and pictures as clues to help us remember the meaning of those "mathematician" words like commutative and associative. The students fill in the last two columns with examples for addition and multiplication equations for each property. The distributive property is not included on this chart. We save that one for a lesson later in the year.

Students can use fraction bars, number lines, or fraction models to determine if the fraction math sentences are true or false. Then on the back they can show their mastery by completing their own < > and = sentences about fractions.

To celebrate the new year, present this unique challenge to your gifted math students. The directions are explained on the worksheet. Students will need to use math processes to arrive at the value of the new year number, beginning with their age number and moving through ten steps.
