I believe learning is not only the acquisition and application of knowledge. It is also a social process. Constructive and positive teacher and student feedback is essential. Reflection stimulates thinking and builds students' motivation and ability to apply and transfer what has been learned into other situations. I must be an instructor and facilitator offering students an opportunity to take a more active role in their learning, and create a safe, caring, and respectful environment that encourages collaborative and supportive learning.
It is equally important to give students an opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to them. Implementing students’ interests fosters intrinsic motivation and stimulates passion for learning. One way to take learning in a direction relevant to students’ interests is to invite student dialogue and active participation into the lessons. When the voice of each student is heard, an environment evolves where students feel free to express themselves respectfully. For me, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love for learning in my students.
