About the store
Well, before teaching, I did my degree in Linguistics, which I guess makes the amount of math I teach and how much I enjoy it sort of ironic. Maybe just a bit ironic, don't you think?
Before that I worked for a game company, where I would sometimes write games for special events. I've brought this love of games to my teaching, and have endeavoured to create some fun activities for the students to practice or discover a skill or concept.

Using Adverbs in a Paragraph
Students will rewrite a paragraph to make it more interesting by inserting adverbs. There are two pages, one with the paragraph, and one with blank spaces where the adverbs can go, in order to help those who need hints.

You Write the Story (with bias)
Students are given the facts of a situation and are asked to write a news article about it. The twist is that they are given a role to play as the writer. They will have two "characteristics" which will affect how they write the article, showing some bias based on the characteristics they are assigned.
The object is to show bias without the news article sounding like an opinion piece. Through writing a biased article, they should be better able to recognize bias, or have more questions about

Which Past Form - Simple vs. Participle
An exercise which can be used as a quiz about which past tense form to use in a sentence. Students fill in the blank where the verb goes, using the simple past, or if there is an auxiliary verb, the participle.

Word of the Day presentation
Students will research a word and present it to the class, explaining its meaning, usage and history. Students should use the chart provided to record the words presented by the other members of the class.
At the end of the presentations, you can create a test using the students' words. I make an example sentence for each word and have the students fill in the word that best fits that sentence.

Students will arrange the words given into the correct order to make a grammatical sentence.

This summative assignment has students outlining a commercial for a product and then pitching their commercial idea to the company who makes the product in order to get the contract. They must explain why their commercial is effective for this product and which advertising techniques they are using.

Circle Graph Assignment
In this assignment, which is a great follow-up to the Intro to Circle Graphs, students will create a survey or research question, and then use the data to create a circle graph. This sheet walks them through each step and provides a circle on the back. They need only to complete the sheet and hand it in.

Reading Instructions Carefully
An exercise in carefully reading all of the instructions. On this sheet, there is a list of instructions that students must follow and respond to in the correct box to show that they have carefully read them all. There are couple of tricks and twists that will force them to practice slowing down to read the instructions thoroughly.

Students will explore what makes a complete sentence rather than a sentence fragment, and put periods in the right places to make complete sentences. Also, There is a section to use a conjunction instead of a period to make a proper compound sentence.

This exercise can be done together with a class, in small groups, or as a quiz if pronouns have already been taught. The purpose is to correctly use subject and object pronouns in sentences to maintain the sense and grammaticality of the sentence.

Balance Lock - Visualizing Algebra
Students need to solve the puzzle of balancing two beams to open a door. The beams have weights on them, some with an unknown weight. When they have added equal weight to both sides, the lock opens. This is a way to visualize balancing equations

Students identify the meaning of common prefixes and apply them to words to see if they result in words they know. Recognizing that many words are familiar, but with prefixes attached can help them improve vocabulary and figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words

Word Parts: Prefixes (Advanced)
Once you have tried the other prefix and suffix exercises and the students have a good idea of how they work, you can try this one. This exercise is more advanced, as it deals with words whose roots might not be English words on their own, but are Latin roots that are very common in English words. Students try matching prefixes with bases to see which ones combine to make words that they know.

Students will require access to the internet for this activity.
Students will be given a list of statements which are commonly held beliefs. These may or may not be true. Students will use the internet to determine which of the statements are true, and which are not, while recording the source of their information.

Homophone Dictionary Assignment
After looking at the features of a dictionary, and then discussing what homophones are, this assignment will provide your students with a resource to their own writing. Many students use the wrong word in their writing because spellcheck doesn't catch homophones of the word that they meant to use. This assignment will have them research and explore homophones, and read and make use of dictionary conventions as they create their own short dictionary of homophones.

Before that I worked for a game company, where I would sometimes write games for special events. I've brought this love of games to my teaching, and have endeavoured to create some fun activities for the students to practice or discover a skill or concept.
Teaching style
I like puns and intertextual references. I've tried to bring some of these to some of my quizzes and activities to get the students a bit more interested in doing an activity that isn't just another boring worksheet or quiz.
Not everything I have here fits into that, though.
I also like to make the difficulty progressive, so that earlier questions lead into the later ones, and this is frequently represented in my quizzes.
Some of the math quizzes have a "level 4" question on them. If the quizzes only include repeats of the questions we practiced, then I'd expect the students to get them all correct. Where does this leave the "A" level student the opportunity to exceed my expectations? So I include a question that asks the student to use the same skills or knowledge in a way that we didn't discuss in class, so that I can see who really understands the concept, and who is just following the steps laid out to solve a similar problem.
Additional biographical information
I am starting a games production business with a friend of mine who is a graphic designer. Although not all of out games will be education-based, the first few are aimed at use in classrooms to help students with math concepts.
