"I Am" poetry is a template that students of all ages can use in order to dig deeper into their own goals, emotions, and actions through poetry. It is also a great tool to use to analyze characters or historical figures. I was first introduced to this format by my English IV teacher when I was in high school, and I've continued to use it with students as young as 2nd grade.

Help your students get started with their Reciprocal Teaching role by giving them sentence starters. Cut the pages into half-sheets so that each student can have their own sentence starter card. When it is time to engage each other in a discussion about the text, students will be able to use the cards to generate their own questions, predictions, and summaries. You can also edit the MS PPT file to create names of your own for these Comprehension Characters!
Use the FAST acronym to analyze characters.
F- feelings
A- actions
S- sayings
T- thoughts
Have student use text evidence to support their analysis and record it on the FAST character map. Students will share their analysis with classmates and explain why their quotes from the text are support for specific character traits.
