Overview
In this activity students will create a mathematical (graphing) model of the lunar phases. They will use metric measurement skills to determine percentage representation of moon phases and develop a graph of the lunar phase. Then they will analyze the graph to make predictions.
Student Learning Objectives:
• Measure accurately using a metric ruler
• Calculate percent of moon surface illuminated
• Organize and graph data
Standards Alignment:
• Middle School Science (6-8) Next Generatio
This is a grading rubric to keep students on track when setting up graphs of any type. Since we all know that graphing is 90% the set up and 10 % the actual plotting of data.
It includes a description of requirements for each category: Excellent, Emerging and Needs Improvement.
I have successfully used this rubric with my students in 9th - 12th grades to improve their graphing and teach them now to become independent graphers.
A quick practice worksheet for students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts of rotation vs revolution, elliptical orbits, and seasons of the Sun Earth Moon system.

Graphic organizer note page to use along the side with Energy Sources reading. This organizer is visually appealing for middle school and high school students. Can be used along with most energy source readings.
It's great for differentiated instructions or modifications for special ed students.
A great guide guided created to track student's understanding of the causes of Earth's seasons.
The note guide works as a pre-asessment tool, during learning note page, and a post lesson reflection.
The way I used it with my students is as follows:
Day 1 -- students fill K, and W of KWL chart and their 'before' opinion on the topic. They pair-share with a partner, annotate their K and Ws, and note whether or not their opinion was changed after pair-share. Students then receive new data about s
This worksheet includes options for student choice int he format of a tic-tac-toe choice board. Each of the nine problems focuses on properties of minerals used to identify them and methods used in identifying minerals.
