This is a visual with steps of how to solve division problems using the box method. This alternate strategy for division is helpful for student who struggle with organizing their work. It also reinforces the concepts of factors and multiples that are used when dividing. It is color coded to assist with understanding each step. This can be used as a reference sheet for students struggling with the skill or as an aid in your lesson.
This activity shows bar models, equations and example word problems that contain comparison statements for all four operations. The first page gives examples for each type of comparison. The second two pages have a word problems, equations and models. There is 1 bar model and equation to match each word problem. You can cut up the last two pages and use them as cards for matching games or memory games. Once the student finds the correct match of 3 cards, they can solve it.
Use the GET strategy to help students understand and solve word problems. If students are struggling to understand when to multiply or divide in equal group word problems, try using the GET strategy. Using this strategy, the student breaks down the information into the groups, the amount in a group or the total. They can then determine the operation based what information is missing.
