I created and taught the year long Personal Finance class that is taught at Berkeley High School in CA. I also taught AP Macroeconomics for 8 years. In AP Macroeconomics I teach a 3 week personal finance unit called The Road to Financial Freedom. This unit gives students the information, confidence and tools to implement everything they need to reach financial freedom. In my year long Personal Finance class, I expand on each of the topics covered in this 3 week unit, in addition to taxes, careers, expanding their dreams and how to reach their goals.

The Road to Financial Freedom is my 3 week unit that I use in my AP Macroeconomics class to give high school seniors the basic information, tools and confidence to achieve financial freedom which is approximately $2.5 million for current students. Getting teens to connect to the value of money and the role it will play in their lives can be very challenging as all they care about is what is happening now and fully enthralled in consumerism and instant gratification. Personal Finance: Investing Research Project ETFs
This is a project for your investing unit after teaching ETFs (exchange traded funds). Students will research the main indexes and the ETFs that follow them. They will explore small, mid and large cap funds and what that could mean for their investing. They will get on the Vanguard website and explore the hundreds of different ETF options and pull important facts about 4 chosen funds. This is a research project to go with your investing unit. In this assignment, students will research 3 stocks of their choice. For each stock they pick they will find 1-2 articles in support of buying stock and 1-2 articles in favor of selling this stock and summarize their findings. Awards & shining teacher moments
Ms. Rigley has been a key player in working with Next Gen Personal Finance to help California pass AB 2927 which requires all high school students to take a semester of Personal Finance to graduate by the year 2030. Her Personal Finance class hosted a press conference with State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, was featured on ABC News, Fox News and in articles by Berkeleyside and CAL Matters.
