Zoo Design Geometry Project MYP Criterion D

Created by

This project assesses students ability to draw rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids of given areas on a scaled grid. They will need to be able to use the area formulas to work backwards to find side lengths that fit the requirement for each animal and use the formulas to show that their area calculation is correct. A detailed MYP Criterion D (Applying Mathematics in the Real World) Rubric is included. I spent about 2 and a half 90 minute class periods on this project and many

The task: Draw 4 points such that when you connect each point to the other 3 points for a total of 6 line segments, there are exactly 2 distinct lengths of line segments. You must connect each point to every other point. This product includes examples and non-examples to use when introducing this task to kids questions to support struggling and advanced groupsa detailed two page answer key that demonstrates each solution visuallyThis worked really well with my honors Geometry students, it led

Area Formulas Card Matching Activity

This activity includes shapes with two columns. One for students to find the correct numbers substituted into the formula correctly, and one with the final answer (area or missing side length). There are several distractor cards that do not match with any of the problems so students have to pay careful attention to make sure they are choosing the correct card. This also includes an independent follow up worksheet that does not come with cards so students have to write in the formula and answer.

Rectangle Area and Perimeter Thinking Problems

Challenging Problems designed for group work on area and perimeter. Fixed area and fixed perimeter problems to push student thinking. Ideal for students who area already familiar with area and perimeter. I gave these to my 6th graders to refresh their memories from previous grades and still challenge them. It can also be used to help students understand why when one of the side lengths is less than one, the area will be less than smaller than the other side length.
