Having the opportunity to design lessons for multi-age classrooms has helped me understand how each student develops their skills and how I can create the environment where they thrive. This experience has included diverse areas of Pre-Kinder, Elementary and Middle School, High School and Higher Education Courses. I also received training for Modified Oral Proficiency ACTFL Certification and served 15 years as a member of our Local, State and National Task Force Committees working to develop sequentially appropriate pedagogy and curriculum. My academic journey also included over 12 years mentoring pre-service teachers in the classroom. After 30 years as a teacher of both Spanish and French, I am now retired from the classroom and the Teachers Pay Teachers platform has given me the ability to share my lessons and experience with teachers around the world. Other experiences: - Focus on differentiated learning - Over 10 years with our local Migrant Education Summer Program teaching Spanish, Math, Science, Reading and Writing to Pre-Kinder levels through grade 12. - Five years teaching in a dual language program for Pre-Kinder through fifth grade. - Three years teaching online adult education Spanish language courses.

I have never shied away from using language immersion as a tool in my classrooms and have always done my best to simulate the experience of living abroad. Immersion is an appropriate method that models the expectation for language study and helps all students to communicate in the language classroom. My activities always have had an interactive component for group and paired communication and students are encouraged to be active participants during the learning process. Above all, positive reinforcement and immediate feedback teaches them to value their in-class contribution and helps to build language confidence. Learning materials should be designed to address a broad range of learning styles and ability levels. This does create a challenge however, lessons can be written so they will adapt for the different skills in the classroom. Written, verbal and reading activities will continue to be important and if we keep in mind the needs of our visual and kinesthetic learners, all students will benefit from these activities. Hands-on projects, thematic songs, rhythm and movement are going to add interest to our curriculum and will help to create the environment where each individual student can find language success no matter the skill level.

Masters of Spanish Literature - Conversant in Portuguese and French

Have traveled to Spain and Costa Rica and have lived in Mexico and Brazil. I still find time to travel out of country each year and when I am not traveling, I am busy caring for my two dogs, three cats and ten chickens on our small farm. I ride horses and am currently in the process of training a rescue horse. I also belong to Back Country Horsemen of America which coordinates well with another hobby of mine; caring for the planet. As volunteer members of BCHA, our group coordinates with the Forest Service to help maintain horse camps and trails. We also are invested in youth and family outreach and teach the principles of Leave No Trace while camping or hiking in our parks and public lands.
