About the store
Twenty seven years college (open-access community college, four year college, and university) teaching in political science (American Government, State Local Government), public policy (Health Policy, Public Administration, Personnel, Public Policy, Grant-Writing, and Public Budget/Finance). Now retired from classroom teaching, I currently tutor adults in G.E.D. classes for a non-profit and teach as a volunteer for another local non-profit (Latina Women's League) a seven week U.S. Citizenship course, to assist adult learners to pass the written, verbal, and comprehension U.S. Citizenship test. Included in my store (as of March 2018) are the seven individual class lessons (power point, and links to brief videos in public domain). A mini-sample of lesson one, and a vocabulary list for the application are available as free downloads. My Citizenship students are adult learning ranging in age from 21 to 81, from Latin and South American countries, Asian, European, and African nations, and Great Britain. It is my hope that the newly posted U.S. Citizenship materials/lessons might provide some income to purchase supplies/books/and equipment for the non-profit in support of this important program. My college students range from age(s) 14 to mid sixties retirees and returning service veterans. About one third of my current students are 11th and 12th grade high school students in dual-enrollment, taking my college courses.

Selma Movie, 1965 Voting Rights Act, Bloody Sunday, Civil Rights

This preview is an excerpt from an actual reproducible handout you can use with your own students and class for a reaction paper on the newly released movie "Selma", the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and "Bloody Sunday". It also includes the 2013 U.S. Supreme Court case Shelby, AL v. Holder, that has significantly weakened the Act, allowing 30 states to re-impose 'voter ID and registration" restrictions, that have especially adversely affected racial and ethnic minority voters. Experience

Teaching style

I use technology, power point--often linked to brief high quality publicly accessible video clips, discussion, role-playing simulations in class, supervised computer based simulations in classroom labs. Small group projects, as well as traditional exams and essays.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Three times nominated finalist for Teacher of the Year (2011, 2016 Santa Fe College) and 2002 (James Madison University). Have received numerous awards for involvement in student services, and as advisor to student conduct boards.

My own education history

I hold a State 6-12 grades Social Science certificate of eligibility (teaching), Bachelors (religion), Masters (Public policy/administration), Graduate certificate in Gender Studies, and PhD (Political Science).

Additional biographical information

I first heard of TpT on TV (Steve Harvey Show) fall 2012. I am currently a newly retired full Professor of Political science, working again part-time at my former college, an open-enrollment four year (formerly community) college which was ranked top in the nation by the PEW Corporation 2014-2016. My semester contracts depend on student enrollment (down considerably in this economy). I originally thought about tutoring, consulting, or exam administration ... but my love is teaching. Having some control over and 'stabilizing' my income through TpT seems perfect, as my husband is approaching retirement and our income will be more than halved. I am always exchanging ancillaries with colleagues, even those for whom I am on occasion a long-term substitute. I have written for pay ancillaries for both Houghton Mifflin, and a national study-guide for another major publisher. Somehow, teachers supporting each other, makes so much more sense, than selling your creative efforts to a national corporation to market. Having access to TpT products, and reading some of the supportive ideas/chats, I think access to others' creative work (would be wonderful for my teaching). My students and I have benefited from materials I have purchased from TpT. It has provided me a supportive 'community' of dedicated creative colleagues. The TpT community has also provided some of the professional development options, our (FL) teaching budgets' have long since ago cut from our colleges and secondary schools. I welcome your constructive feedback, comments and suggestions on my work, and if you would like updates and revisions on products please follow me.
