Science: The Making of Ice Cream vs the Freezing of Water

Created by
Pat Mitchell
This lesson covers the freezing temperature of water and how it can be altered to lower the temperature at which water freezes. In doing so, students perform a lab to make their own ice cream. It also allows students to measure using a graduated cylinder and triple beam balance. Measurements are made in metric units. Also included are questions, a graph for students and several questions regarding the lab. There is also some ideas for extension activities.

Experience

I have taught biology at the high school level for 10 years In addition, I have taught 5th grade science, reading and language arts.

Teaching style

I am a very hands-on science teacher. Student involvement is very important to me. I like to see students actively working together as they find solutions to their questions.

My own education history

I graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. After receiving my degree, I continued my studies at SMU, TWU, NTSU and UTA to receive additional certifications.

I have been married for almost 30 years to the same man, and we have one daughter who is a junior at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Our family have been foster parents to many dogs of the DFW Humane Society, and we currently have 2 dogs of our own. I believe in animal rights and have also served on the board of directors of the DFW Humane Society. My husband and I recently moved to South Carolina and have just begun to explore TPT.
