AR Goal Parent Letter

Since our school year is based on trimesters, I send this AR Goal Parent Letter home three times a year. The student's goal is a trimester goal, but you can base it on whatever you choose (month, semester, etc.). With help from our school's librarian, I establish an AR Goal for a typical reader in my grade level. I have learned that "one size fits all" goals don't work for all kids. Families therefore adjust their child's goal according to their reading ability, interest and motivation. Goals ar

The PERFECTED Weekly AR Home Reading Log

After assigning weekly home reading logs for over 20 years, I have finally perfected this document! It has all the information I need to give an instant grade. It is the student's responsibility to complete it accurately, or I don't accept it. This school year I announced that I will not accept them after Tuesday of each week. This has eliminated the "reading log paper chase." The ONE page log includes... 1. Clear requirements for full credit (for students and parents) 2. Quick checklist for stu

This AR Parent Update form accompanies the AR Student Record from the Accelerated Reader program. I use it as a means of communication for parents. It is especially useful for the student who repeatedly begins to read a book, but never finishes, thus does not routinely take AR tests. It is also useful for the student who is reading multiple books at once (at home and at school) but does not routinely take tests. It is an eye opener for the student too!

Do you need an incentive for your students to turn in their AR Home Reading Log on time? My students will do anything to get a hold of one of these! You can change the raffle prize each week. I like to post it Monday morning on a white board. They love silly stuff like "sit on the teacher stool during...," "change the background on my teacher laptop," and "sit at my desk during..." It is fun to surprise them with a free book from Scholastic Book Orders or a snack. After the AR Home Reading Logs
