Morphology is one of my favorite things to teach. I get to touch on decoding, encoding, vocabulary, and grammar all in one lesson! Any one of those subject areas can be daunting for our students, which is why I focus on making activities that make morphology fun and approachable. Figuring out when to use -ABLE vs -IBLE can be tough without knowing the associated generalizations. The activity lays out all of the considerations a student must make when determining how to spell the suffix meaning

I am a huge fan of nonsense words! I've worked with so many students who have been able read words by memory but have a hard time when encountering unfamiliar vocabulary words. To ensure that students are applying learned skills at the most basic level, I love to use nonsense words. They are a great indicator as to whether or not a student is independently applying their segmenting and sound-symbol association skills.

Sometimes we teach connective i concepts alone and sometimes we teach them as part of a suffix. With -tial and -cial, we teach them as a unit because they say /shul/. But how do you figure out which spelling to use? This game is the perfect opportunity for students to discover the spelling generalization. As they play, as students to identify the letter before the suffix. At the end, the student can determine what type of letter usually precedes the suffix (it is a generalization, after all!).

It provides an excellent opportunity to learn how language can be rigid and flexible. For example, misspell literally means to "wrongly spell" while the word misdeed means "immoral or wicked deed." This game was a lot of fun to make and taught me a few new words in the process. I hope you and your students will enjoy it as much as I have with mine.

Additional biographical information

I'm dyslexic and really struggled to learn to read and spell. I was lucky enough to have creative and passionate teachers who helped me be successful academically, which eventually led me to my own path as a special education teacher/reading specialist. Even with all the support I had, I wasn't exposed to explicit phonics instruction until I learned the Orton-Gillingham method in my first job out of college. It is not an exaggeration to say that learning phonics at the age of 22 changed the trajectory of my life. I will never forget the moment I was taught that c and g have two sounds. I had made it all the way through four years of college without ever understanding this! As a result, I have made it a mission to blend my creativity and my appreciation of phonics to ensure other students have access to age-appropriate explicit phonics lessons.
