With 30 different subject cards, and 10 pre-filled BINGO boards with 24 words each, the potential for this game is immense! Most of the verbs on the pre-filled cards are Tier 2 vocabulary for 6th graders, but if that doesn't work for you, use the reproducible blank BINGO card option to have students fill in the cards with their own vocabulary words. I hope you enjoy this game as much as my students did!

This game and spelling activity helps students learn, remember, and apply most of the guidelines for adding -ing. The words include cvc, vce, ending consonant blend, and vowel team concepts. Vowel Y is unusual. It functions as the spelling for three different sounds - /ē/, /ī/ and /ĭ/. It can be hard to determine when to use Vowel Y as a spelling! This activity helps with one aspect of it - identifying when Vowel Y is used as a suffix. This activity is a basic sort. Students will differentiate between “Y as a Vowel Suffix” (as in sandy, foggy) or as “Y as a Vowel NOT a Suffix” (as in penny, daisy). You can use the sort with just the sounds of /ē/ or use it with the /ī/ and /ĭ/ so

Additional biographical information

I'm dyslexic and really struggled to learn to read and spell. I was lucky enough to have creative and passionate teachers who helped me be successful academically, which eventually led me to my own path as a special education teacher/reading specialist. Even with all the support I had, I wasn't exposed to explicit phonics instruction until I learned the Orton-Gillingham method in my first job out of college. It is not an exaggeration to say that learning phonics at the age of 22 changed the trajectory of my life. I will never forget the moment I was taught that c and g have two sounds. I had made it all the way through four years of college without ever understanding this! As a result, I have made it a mission to blend my creativity and my appreciation of phonics to ensure other students have access to age-appropriate explicit phonics lessons.
