Students discover that fire fighters need middle-school math. Hot Heels 2 RATIOS
Killer Heels vs Trainer No Brainer
Grade 7 and Grade 8 students complete some warm-up exercises involving measuring, converting units and drawing to scale. Then they use this math to measure real high heels and sneakers.
Students use shoe charts to work out foot lengths and the height of high heels for some very tall celebrities. LeBron, we can fit you will hot heels. Ha!
There's a fun activity to wrap the lesson.

Hot Heels 3 UNIT RATES
Faster than a speeding chicken!
Year 6, 7 and 8 students complete some warm-up exercises involving real people and real problems such as BPM (beats per minute) and FPM (Acrobatic flips per minute)and then use this math to test an Urban Myth about high heel shoes.
The lessons ends with an hysterically funny exercise.

Grade 6 and 7 students complete some warm-up exercises and then involving area calculations, direct proportion and basic algebra. They they use this math to calculate the pressure created by the heels of various shoes.

Year 6,7 and 8 students complete some warm-up exercises calculating mean, median and mode for real results of a real watermelon seed spitting competition with real people. They then use this math to test an Urban Myth about walking with coffee .
The teacher rules here. Wait until the end. You should be the walking with coffee STAR. Of course, students use water.

Hot Heels 1 ANGLES
The Angle of Death
This exercise takes Grade 7 and Grade 8 geometry into their world. Students complete some warm-up exercises involving supplementary and complementary angles and right angle triangles and then they use this math to measure angles of high heel shoes in photographs.
Students use this information to calculate THE ANGLE OF DEATH. And there is a motivating fun exercise to end the lesson.

Teaching style
After studying math at university for 5 years, then teaching for 10 years, I made a big discovery. I never wanted to know the answer to any problem. I simply wanted to get the answer right and move on.
I taught in some tough high schools. On my first day at one school a student threw a bike off a roof. Now I understand their rage. Only a small % of students love math for the challenge. It's like Latin, a dead language, to the rest. So I started my math blog MATHSPIG to show teachers and principals that math could be REAL, RELEVANT and FUN.
I concentrate on the TOUGH YEARS: Middle School.
Math teachers don't have time to be creative. So I'm producing the WORKSHEETS that I would have wanted for my challenging classes. So here are the worksheets that motivate students, even difficult students, to DO THE MATH.
