I recently came across an article titled “What We Lost When We Lost Our Hymnals”. This article has inspired me to create a series of Band Warm-ups using some of the great hymns. I teach at a small, private, Christian school so I wanted my students to come to know not only the tunes of these great hymns, but the words as well! I have arranged a series of 88 hymns and arranged them with a middle school Band in mind. Each arrangement is a straight transcription from the actual hymns parts and p

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching since 1993 and have mostly taught Band, but some Choir, Guitar, Percussion Ensemble, and General Music along the way. I have also been on the worship team either as leader or member at whatever church I have attended.

Teaching style

I have always felt extremely fortunate to teach the same students from middle school through high school and share in something that they love! When you are with students for 8 years, you can't help but get to know them and have a deep relationship with not only the student, but with the family as well. My students know that I love them dearly but I also hold them to a high standard not only musically, but morally as well. We make mistakes together but at the end of the day, hopefully we have lived corem Deo!!!!!

Awards & shining teacher moments

1997 Teacher Leadership Technology Grant My HS Concert and Jazz Bands have always received a superior or excellent rating at festivals and contests. One of the biggest highlights of my career was being able to work with composer Christopher Tin on a piece for my combined ensembles.

My own education history

1993: Bachelor of Music from Western Washington University; 1998: Master of Music from Central Washington University; 2014: Residency Principals Certificate from Western Washington University

Additional biographical information

I have spent my entire career teaching in Washington State. I spent 24 years in the public schools and since 2017 have taught in a small private Christian School - and honestly since making the switch, I have never been happier or more satisfied with my career!!!
