About this ResourceIn this exploration task, students ‘discover’ the properties of parallelograms, rhombi, rectangles, squares, trapezoids and kites. They do this by measuring side lengths, diagonal lengths and angles. They record their answers in the spaces provided and then write down any patterns they notice. There are seven activities in this resource: parallelogram, rhombus, rectangle, square, trapezoid, isosceles trapezoid and kite. Students will also need a ruler and a protractor. Ideal

Have your students discover the triangle centers for themselves. This product contains teacher notes, PowerPoint slides and blank triangles. Students will fold triangles and draw on these triangles to "discover" the different triangle center properties. The PowerPoint takes you and the students through the lesson step by step. A great way to introduce this topic and an excellent aide to refer back to at a later date.

This short activity is a great way of introducing the concept of scale factor, area factor and volume factor. Students often find this concept difficulty to understand, but this activity is quick way of giving them a head start. Working individually, or as a class, students discover for themselves the relationship between scale factor, area factor and volume factor. They have a box to fill out at the end of the activity to explain the result in their own words. The zip file contains a pdf of t

Escape From Math 2 - Parallel and Perpendicular Lines

In this activity, students have to graph six lines by utilizing properties of parallel and perpendicular lines. The graph paper is a plan of a room superimposed on a coordinate grid. Once the six lines are drawn correctly, only one exit will be available to escape room. Students have to find that exit. There are two versions of the game, both available with this download. The six equations can all be given at once to each player, and then it simply becomes a race to solve the problem as quickly

This exploration allows students to discover the rules surrounding interior and exterior angles in a regular polygon. The front side of the sheet shows a diagram of a regular pentagon, space for students to record their rules and a table in which they can summarize their results for polygons with different number of sides. The reverse side of the sheet shows 8 regular polygons (3 sides to 10 sides) which the students divide into triangles which will help them explore the sum of interior angles o

In this activity, students have to graph six circles. The graph paper is a plan of a room superimposed on a coordinate grid. Once the six circles have been drawn correctly, only one of the six people will be able to escape the room and only two of the exits will be available to that person. Students have to find which person can escape and which two exits are safe. There are two versions of the game included in this download – an easier and a harder version. In the harder version, each circle i

About this Resource In this exploration task, students ‘discover’ the Triangle Inequality Theorem. They do this by cutting out sides of triangles of various lengths (side lengths provided) and attempting to fit them together in to various triangles. Recording their answers on a sheet, they discover that some side lengths will form triangles, but some will not. The reverse side of the worksheet develops their thinking further, until they arrive at the Triangle Inequality Theorem. This worksheet

About this ResourceThis activity challenges to think about triangles and quadrilaterals in a new way. Given a 3 by 3 grid, students have to find the eight possible triangles and the sixteen possible quadrilaterals. The key contains all the answers, together with the same of each shape. The triangle and quadrilateral activity can be used together or separately. Terms of UsePlease note: this resource is for use by one teacher only. Additional teachers must purchase their own license.

Experience

I have 10+ years experience teaching math at both the middle school and high school levels. Additionally, I am a published author, writing chapters in 8+ textbooks. I bring the skills that I have learned authoring textbooks to help create enjoyable resources.

Teaching style

I like to think that my students gain in confidence with math throughout the time they have me as a teacher. I like to make my explanations clear and simple to follow. To that end, my resources should be helpful in getting students to understand and explore the math they are learning.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have taught math in the UK and the USA. It might not be an honor or an award, but it does give me incredible insight into two similar but different educational systems.

My own education history

Master of Math from the University of Manchester, England. Teaching Certificate from the University of Gloucestershire, England.

Additional biographical information

I am qualified to teach math in Michigan, USA and throughout the United Kingdom.
