STEM Design Challenge for NGSS MS-PS-3-3 Apply scientific principles to design, construct, and test a device that either minimizes or maximizes thermal energy transfer I use this as a STEM design challenge towards the end of our unit on thermal energy.  We usually take 2.5 to 3, 60 minute class periods to do the challenge including the building, testing and reflection. If you have students build the cups as homework you will need less class time for this design challenge. Day 1 and 2: Explor

In this Winter Holiday or Christmas-themed activity for middle school science or math, students work collaboratively to graph the data they collect about foot length and height, and use the graphs they make to extrapolate and predict the required information about the height of the tree they need for the gift. Students practice measurements in either inches or centimeters, making a scatter plot graph, and finding the line of best fit. Set in the North Pole with Santa Claus and his Elves, stude

In this creative STEM, modeling in science, project, students apply Newton’s Laws of Motion to a real-world situation. I use it to scaffold students to prepare for the NGSS Physical Science performance assessments related to MS-PS-2: Motion and Forces. Students are challenged to create a before and after model of an accident scene using toy vehicles and to then apply Newton's Laws of Motion to explain how the motion of the objects changed before, during, and after the accident. Teaching style

Part of the work I do at my school includes duties as a vertical team leader for all 11 science teachers in grades 6th-8th, facilitating our professional learning community and coordinating with my building and district administration to improve science instruction. As part of these duties I do research on science best practices, such as the 5e instructional model and the CER or claim, evidence, reasoning writing framework for science explanations and develop short professional development sessions for our staff. I also work with my grade level team of science teachers and special education teachers to develop common assessments and to make appropriate accommodations for students. I am also a formal and informal mentor to a number of teachers both in my content and in other subjects as well.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I am actively involved in developing and teaching professional development opportunities related to using the NGSS and science instructional best practices at the district, state, and national levels. I presented at the NSTA National Conference in Chicago in 2015 and the NSTA Regional Conference in Milwaukee in 2017 on how to use the NGSS to make scientific thinking accessible to all learners. I also presented in 2026 at WSST on equity in sensemaking for science classrooms, including visually impaired students.
