Following Lucy Calkin's Reading Workshop model, these lesson plans cover the standards for Grade 5 Character Study Unit over a six week period. They include clear objectives (to meet the standards), daily mini-lessons, sample charts you can adapt to your population, differentiation suggestions, and specific examples from our class read aloud, Jerry Spinelli's Maniac Magee. As a final piece for the year, students celebrate all they have learned throughout the year. They can also give advice to incoming students, share their favorite activities, and reflect on their individual growth. Quick and easy assignment that you can adjust to your needs. You can go further with this and have the students share their pieces creating a class celebration of achievements.

This is a quick in-notebook activity. Students will read various nonfiction articles and rename them. Students should justify their new article name using evidence from the text. I do this with Time For Kids, but you can use any articles!

It's a quick and easy activity where students hunt for nonfiction text features, charting their finding and explaining what they learned from each feature. The goal is to find the biggest variety of features possible. You can use any NF resource (TFK is a good one!).
