I love leading book clubs with my chapter book readers, but I always struggled with helping them be prepared for the meeting while also keeping their work authentic. (I always found assigned roles such as "Word Detective" and "Summarizer" and "Questioner" to be limiting.) So, I created a general guide and note-taking sheet that would prepare my students to read and discuss any book, that I could use again and again with different groups over the whole school year.

Lucy Calkins and Jennifer Seravallo stress the importance of students knowing and understanding the structure of a reading conference so the student can focus on the teaching point. I made these bookmarks for students to keep so they would always know what to expect from a reading conference and would always be prepared for one!
