In order to assess student understanding, I taught students about an assessment type called the One-Pager. Students enjoyed finding their own multisyllabic words that were a part of this worksheet. Using the elements of a fictional narrative (character(s), sequence (plot), setting (when and where), conflict and narrator (POV)), students have the opportunity to edit another classmates fictional narrative. This could also be used for a self-edit. Students have learned how to complete a plot mountain in prior learning activities, so they are asked to complete a plot mountain for the fictional narrative they read/edited on the second page.

There is a word bank with the 8 parts of speech, along with the answer key. This is a great way to pre-assess or use as a formal assessment. I have a digital version (Google Forms) of this available as well.

In my store, there is a powerpoint that goes over VCCV syllables. Students did this together in class. Then, students use this resource independently to show me what they have learned. Since the words follow the same pattern, students feel very successful after practicing. One of the most important things we can give to our struggling readers - or even build with our emerging readers - is confidence.

This activity will walk you through how to administer a brief pretest (formative assessment) for students in middle school. First students take a pretest (google form) or the pre-test is the worksheet (just copy and paste the worksheet questions into a google form). The worksheet is then done together (or individually). Finally, students play a blooket (link provided) to reinforce the learning targets necessary to build the foundation for reading success.

In this activity, students choose five songs (tracks) that they would like to share for a classroom playlist. They will also choose a song that is designated as their favorite. This gives the teacher an opportunity to add at least one song from each student's playlist. Students can use this worksheet with another product that I have listed (HOOK/Lead Engaging or Boring - powerpoint). This is where they can assess the hooks/leads based on what has been taught.

Based on a purchase from a fellow TPTer in a Journalism lesson bundle, I created a flip chart for my students to master our learning target, "How do I know if it's news or not? (News Determinants)" There are a variety of ways to make the graphic organizer, but I've provided a picture of the final product. Instead of having the students write this by hand, you could have the words and definitions printed ahead of time to simply be glued into the flip chart.
