Teacher’s Notes: While reading Fish in a Tree, I wanted to do something different with my students, so for each chapter we took notes with important story elements.  If the chapter was short, we practiced writing a summary together.  You will notice that I had the students organize their notes, and I collected them for a grade.  This held students accountable when they missed a chapter.  I do have an answer key for these chapters, but they are all hand-written.  I will try to type them and add t

Prior to this culminating activity, students read the book Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. In order to assess student understanding, I taught students about an assessment type called the One-Pager. As an educator, One-Pagers are a way to assess students understanding of a variety of topics, but they find them engaging and the students who enjoy art have an opportunity to shine. You can create any criteria for the One-Pager. For Fish in a Tree, I selected the things you see on this ch

Finally, we had a discussion about what was happening in the world and filled out the chart and the number of dots that represented a million people (estimates) for each of the 7 Continents. Students enjoyed finding their own multisyllabic words that were a part of this worksheet. You could do this activity with any book that you are reading aloud - or even a short story that you read together in class. The feedback I received from students: After they started the worksheet, they wished it was a little bit shorter, or they wished it was divided into Parts 1 and 2.  At the end of this document, you will notice that I divided the assignment (independent learning portion) into two part

Using the elements of a fictional narrative (character(s), sequence (plot), setting (when and where), conflict and narrator (POV)), students have the opportunity to edit another classmates fictional narrative. This could also be used for a self-edit. Students have learned how to complete a plot mountain in prior learning activities, so they are asked to complete a plot mountain for the fictional narrative they read/edited on the second page.

In my store, there is a powerpoint that goes over VCCV syllables. Students did this together in class. Then, students use this resource independently to show me what they have learned. Since the words follow the same pattern, students feel very successful after practicing. One of the most important things we can give to our struggling readers - or even build with our emerging readers - is confidence.

This activity will walk you through how to administer a brief pretest (formative assessment) for students in middle school. First students take a pretest (google form) or the pre-test is the worksheet (just copy and paste the worksheet questions into a google form). The worksheet is then done together (or individually). Finally, students play a blooket (link provided) to reinforce the learning targets necessary to build the foundation for reading success.

This product has both the PowerPoint and document for a mini-lesson covered hooks/leads and using real examples from personal narratives to determine whether a lead is engaging, somewhere in between, or even boring. Teachers can use the presentation, along with the worksheet to keep students engaged. Students will also have a chance to change one hook (edit) to make it more engaging. It would be very easy for the teacher to take real hooks/leads written in the rough drafts of personal narrati

Students struggled with the concept of the Western Calendar (B.C. and A.D. (religious) or secular B.C.E. and C.E.), so we used the concept of a personal timeline to solidify and advance student learning. Step 1. Introduce the religious and secular calendars and what the labels represent. Step 2. Assign students the worksheet to brainstorm events from prior to, and after, their birth. Students will need to interview someone at home. If this is not possible, I allow historical events as well -

In this activity, students choose five songs (tracks) that they would like to share for a classroom playlist. They will also choose a song that is designated as their favorite. This gives the teacher an opportunity to add at least one song from each student's playlist. Creating a collective playlist helps to build classroom community, and it allows the students to have a voice in the classroom.

Based on a purchase from a fellow TPTer in a Journalism lesson bundle, I created a flip chart for my students to master our learning target, "How do I know if it's news or not? (News Determinants)" There are a variety of ways to make the graphic organizer, but I've provided a picture of the final product. Instead of having the students write this by hand, you could have the words and definitions printed ahead of time to simply be glued into the flip chart.
