This document contains 10 questions that students are asked to solve or simplify using the graphing calculator. The last two pages of the document include an answer key as well as explanations as to how students would have made the most common mistakes. Rounding, substitution, scientific notation, More… square roots, radicals, negatives, exponents, absolute values, mixed numbers, improper fractions, simple right triangle trigonometry are addressed
We have all seen cartoons of a character falling on a ladder away from a building. Many of us have also seen ladders fall straight down as evidenced in the picture on the right. Both of these events are due to misplacement of ladders. How do we know how to safely place a ladder? Students will use right triangle trig and the pythagorean theorem to investigate methods of setting up a ladder, sin, cos, tan, ratio, sine, cosine, tangent
: According to Wikipedia, the London Eye is the largest Ferris Wheel in the Western Hemisphere. It took 7 years to build the Eye and it was originally known as the Millennium Wheel. The circumference of the Eye is approximately 424m. The total weight of the wheel alone is 2100 tonnes, which makes it 20 times heavier than Big Ben. Over 3.5 million people ride the Eye every year. One complete rotation on the Eye takes about 30 minutes. On a clear day, you can see up to 25 miles in each dire
This activity will engage students by giving them a card and asking them to find the student with either the matching question or the matching answer. A full blank page of I have and a full page of blank who has cards have been included. Please feel free to use the examples in the cards and also let me know how the activity worked in your class.
It is ironic that in this age of recession, baseball players are doing better than they ever have before. Teachers are chastised for asking for full time wages for working 10 months a year, while ballplayers play a game for 6 months a year and the average major league ballplayer is paid FIFTY TIMES (average major league salary $2 million/year … Starting teaching salary $40K) that of a beginning teacher. Since the rising salary is a fact of life, let’s figure out just how much these players con

Recently, we went to dinner and used a 10% off coupon. The bill and coupon are attached. The discount is shown at the bottom. Was the discount applied correctly? If not, then what should the discount have been instead? Is there an easy way to find a 10% off discount?
Based on the data in the graph below, determine an appropriate growth model for the population of the world. Be careful about the years that you use. Remember 10000 BC could be considered -10000, or you could use 0 for 10000 BC and then adjust the other years appropriately. You should find at least three growth models and then explain which of the models is the most appropriate. Use residuals, graphs and correlation coefficients to explain why your model is the most appropriate. Linear, exp
Dolbear theorized that the temperature can be computed by counting the number of times a cricket chirps in 15 seconds, and then adding 40 for the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. For example, if a cricket chirped 20 times in 15 seconds, Dolbear theorized that would mean that the outside temperature was 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Find a linear equation that relates cricket chirps to degrees Fahrenheit. Use N for number of chirps and F for Fahrenheit.
More than 200 years ago, a wealthy Pennsylvania merchant named Jacob DeHaven lent $450,000 to the Continental Congress to rescue the troops at Valley Forge. That loan was apparently never repaid. The descendants say that they are willing to be flexible about the amount of a settlement and that they might even accept a heartfelt thank you or perhaps a DeHaven statue. But they also note that interest is accumulating at $190 a second. New York Times May 27, 1990
Students often approach me with graphing calculators and say “This is broken,” or “the batteries are dead.” More often than not, the calculator is still usable. This guide should help you restore life to many of those calculators, AAA, texas instruments, TI83, Nspire
