This is a fun and hands-on lab using Skittles to teach estimation, converting fractions to percents, creating bar graphs and pie charts. The students can then use the data to solve a variety of math problems including comparing sets and addition, subtraction, multiplication and a couple of challenges that use the order of operations. It can be used with M & Ms if you prefer.

I am a 13th year teacher currently teaching in a resource classroom at a primary school (K-3) in Phoenix, AZ.

Teaching style

My teaching style is one of patience and understanding. I must meet the individual academic needs of each student and use direct instruction with a multisensory approach to lesson planning. It is always wonderful to help these students reach their goals and experience success!

Awards & shining teacher moments

Silver Apple Award awarded May 2010 by Channel 3 TV and Ace Air. A true honor because I was nominated by one of my 8th grade students!

My own education history

I earned my BA in Special Education from Arizona State University in 2005. I went on to earn my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading from Grand Canyon University in 2007.
