Dialectical journals are an effective and interactive way for students to reflect on and respond to their reading. I have used these for grades 4th-8th but they could be modified to meet the needs of both younger and older grades. These journals are an open dialogue with a book/novel that the students are reading. They can be used with a read-aloud, literature group, or at home book. The students love to make predictions and then read on to see how accurate they are.

I use these sorts to deepen students' understanding of some of the patterns that students will encounter as they read. The cards can be printed on card stock and then laminated so a teacher can customize the sorts by adding patterns students need to focus on. The 3rd word list sheet contains blanks that can be written on and laminated to add additional sorts.

They fill the sheet out for each step in a process and then they give a reason for why the step may be beneficial for them. This sheet works particularly well in math and science but can be used in all areas. This sheet can answer that question..."Why do we have to do this?"
