IEP Parent Input Survey

It can be difficult to gather meaningful yet concise information about parental concerns when writing an IEP. Parents don't know exactly what kind of information you're looking for; accurate documentation of a conversation is a hassle; not to mention, no one has time for a formal interview. This survey can be sent home and returned for easy collection of short, informative, multiple choice statements as well as space for additional information in written form. I like to send mine home with the N

This colorful graphic organizer provides a visual reminder of how to apply the order of operations. With concise descriptions, this is an accessible graphic which could be used as a classroom poster or given to specific students. If using this graphic as a visual for a lesson, a teacher could activate students' prior knowledge by comparing the graphic to the classic game of hopscotch ("hop from the top to the bottom, with some steps happening at the same time!"). I used this graphic organizer when closely reading an article explaining school uniforms, both the good and the bad. It could be applied to a story with multiple main ideas or adjusted to compare and contrast. Each section is clearly labeled and the placement of each piece was informed by the Make Sense Strategies initiative. Well made graphic organizers are beneficial to all students but especially those with special learning needs. This one could be used over and over again for fiction and inf

Text Evidence and Author's Point of View

I made this graphic handout when I realized that several of my students knew about text evidence and knew about author's point of view but couldn't connect the two in a meaningful way. The purpose of this handout is to teach students that just because a quote comes from the text does not mean it counts as text evidence to support a point. Students determine which quote supports the author's point of view and then explain or justify their reasoning. This can be done independently or used as a min
