Students need to know some personal information. What they don’t have memorized, they need to be able to locate using their student ID, a personal data card, a pocket resume, the internet, and so on. I taught 18-21 year olds for several years, and we spent a lot of time in the community. Community-based instruction is valuable for generalizing academic skills, and it also offers gifts of unplanned, unexpected teaching moments, too, doesn't it? A weekly activity was to plan a menu, go grocery shopping, make lunch, and clean up. Other days, we practiced shopping or price checking at drug stores, party supply stores, and discount stores. We went out for lunch at a variety of restaurants and ex

Money Skills are so important in life and they provide a helpful foundation for many other math concepts and skills. I’ve designed this unit for those students who need more repetition and practice to develop money skills. Data sheets and lesson plans are designed for 1-1 or small group instruction. 17 sets of activity cards can be made into matching activities for independent work. Lessons are carefully sequenced so that they build slowly. A paraprofessional should be able to pick it up and

Additional biographical information

I love helping students to become independent which translates to teaching lifeskills, especially in the community. When I noticed students who were right on the verge of being independent as they graduated or exited the school system, I was inspired to create a decision-making app to provide a middle layer of support for them and peace of mind for parents. It's called Smart Steps Mobile. See www.SmartSteps4me.com for more information.
