Looking for a way to combine social emotional learning within your typical curriculum? This fun activity addresses both. This 3-day lesson uses the picture book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt to help students analyze character needs, motivations, and perspectives in a low-stakes, highly engaging format. While this was designed for 9th grade students, this lesson can be easily adapted for upper elementary or middle school. High school students love the chance to read a picture book
This handout is derived from Graff and Birkenstein's "They Say, I Say" text. My students do not have their own copies of the book, but I use it as a mentor text during our argument writing units, and this handout gives them a good selection of sentence frames to use. I would recommend this product to anyone teaching argument writing, especially if you are involved with the NWP's C3WP (College, Career, and Community Writing Project). Note: I did not include all of the sentence frames from the b
This is a unit that I use for an adaptive 12th grade English class with the first Harry Potter Book. Included: -Astrology Project -Final Project Outline -House Crest Design -Quickwrites -Vocabulary Quidditch Game -"A Picture Says" worksheet -Character analysis worksheet -Mirror of Erised Analysis Activity -Symbolism worksheet -Symbolism Project
Are you introducing your students to podcasts? I've found that the best way to get students interested in podcasts is to create an atmosphere where they can find ones that are interesting to THEM. I've put together this scavenger hunt and bingo, where students can do an activity to find podcasts that have various genres, topics, and characteristics. Digital note: I'm using this digitally for distance learning. Students can link to the podcast right on the sheets. General note: You could use thi
This is "Day 1" of the science fiction lesson I teach. It is a prezi that goes over subgenres of science fiction, a historical look at science fiction (the prezi includes the George Melies "Trip to the Moon"), and the difference between science fiction and fantasy. Guided notes and a key are included.
Need a movie day before break, but want to tie it to curriculum? The Gremlins is a classic, kids love it, and it has CLEAR tone and mood for students to practice identifying. Use this worksheet for practice identifying them.
This is a worksheet to help your students incorporate textual evidence into their argument writing in effective and authentic ways. I use this worksheet after students have read two or three argument articles from which they will gather textual evidence to make their own argument.
As a teaching consultant with the NWP, I have been using this worksheet along with the College, Career, and Community Writers Program lessons. It works great when teaching the illustrating moves from Joseph Harris. I
This is a simple worksheet to go along with the movie "Stepford Wives" (the 2004 version). It focuses on gender studies, and I use it with my contemporary lit class. There are 20 critical analysis questions to answer while the movie is playing, and that you can use to launch a class discussion after it is done. The movie is PG-13. As with any film, make sure to view it ahead of time to make sure it is appropriate for your class. My students are 12th graders.
Students choose one of the main characters and make inferences about the character based on dialogue they choose. This was used with a "remedial" 11th grade course.
