Teaching is my second career. I spent 14 years in the computer software industry, starting out as a programmer and working my way up to Information Systems Manager. I then owned a small newsletter publishing business for 5 years. After selling the business, I decided to teach math - my very favorite subject. I have taught Intensive math, Pre-Algebra and Algebra I in a middle school classroom, and I've taught Intensive Math, Algebra 1 and Geometry in the High School setting. I currently am teaching High School Pre-Calculus, Algebra II and at the college level Intermediate Algebra and College Algebra.

As an 8th grade math teacher, I found that many of my students had forgotten their basic math facts. I needed a quick way for them to practice the math facts daily until they had remembered them, thus I developed the Math Facts Drill sheets which contains 5 days worth of 25 problems each day. I teach both low and honors level Algebra II courses and found that the students really hate the tediousness of simplifying radicals of various roots, but it is a concept used elsewhere and must be mastered through practice. A Story for Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
I taught middle school math and the concept of simplifying algebraic expressions seemed to be a hurdle my students just couldn't master. They seemed to think that x's could be added to x^2's or y's could be added to x's. They even added x's to numbers! What is a teacher to do? The Order of Operations Rotation Relay, based on the popular Relay Race, is a fun way to review/practice the order of operations. This game was designed to be played in small groups with 2 to 4 teams of partner pairs as a math center activity or it can be played as a whole class activity.

A perfect math center activity, these puzzles are designed for students to practice solving equations of various levels. Students can work the puzzles individually or as a group of 2-3 students. Integer PIG - A Card Game to Practice Operations on Integers
I'm always trying to come up with fun and different games that students can play to practice a math concept we've learned in the classroom. Geometry Interactive Word Wall with Pictorial Word Wall Words
Posting words to a Word Wall only makes Word Walls partially effective. To maximize the effectiveness of a word wall, you need to make them interactive. Safe Landing Manipulative/Activity to Practice Adding and Subtracting Integers
This is a manipulative that also can be used as a game or math center activity to practice adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers.
There are many ways to teach adding positive and negative numbers, but the method I found that worked best for my middle school students was using a hot air balloon analogy. Hot air represents positive numbers and sandbags represent negative numbers. Adding hot air will cause the balloon to rise, while adding sandbags causes the balloon to go down.

Teaching style
I have a very mixed style of teaching depending on my audience. I like to use hands on activities whenever possible. I also believe that the only way to reach every student is to teach several different ways of arriving at the same answer. Most students will find the way that is the easiest for them to understand.

Additional biographical information
On a personal note, I've been married for 25 years and have three children - two in college and one still in high school. When I first started teaching at the high school level, I was asked to be a class sponsor, so being the newbie I said "yes." I have been the HHS Class of 2013 sponsor for three years now and feel like I have an additional 300 kids! I love teaching and am so happy I made this career change!
