Teaching style

I'm a healthy balance of high expectations, with a lot of engaging fun built-in! I believe that I need to tap into each student's ideal modalities, in order to spark interest and excitement for learning!

Awards & shining teacher moments

I am the recipient of the Teacher of the Year at my school for the 2023-24 school year. I'm also Google Educator certified, am GATE-trained, and am a Cotsen Art of Teaching Fellowship alum.

My own education history

I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin (Hook 'em, Horns!) with a bachelor of science degree in Applied Learning and Development (Elementary Education), with a specialization in Special Education. Upon graduating, I moved to southern California, where I began my teaching career in Kindergarten. I taught Kindergarten for 7 years. During the course of that time, I received my Masters of Education from National University. I took a 10 year break from teaching (to raise my own children). During that time, I served as a children's director for a local church, where I created curriculum for children, ages 3-10). I re-entered the public sector of education by serving as an ELD instructor for 1 year, followed by a school TOSA for 2 years (focusing on reading instruction). I missed being in a classroom setting of my own, so as of 2017, I have been back in the classroom teaching 2nd grade (and a little bit of 1st).

Additional biographical information

I'm a PROUD children's book author! It has always been a dream to be fulfilled, and in 2024, I self-published my own book, titled "My Eyes to Your Heart: Seeing Students Through a Teacher's Lens". It's available on Amazon! This book highlights the fact that we as teachers can see the range of emotions in the children who walk into the classroom. And as we notice those feelings and emotions, we also encourage students to make the right choices through those emotions, because our hope as teachers is for them to pair confidence with humility, fear with strength, anger with kindness, and joy with encouragement for friendship. Additionally, this book was a labor of love, as my 2 teenage daughters digitally illustrated the pages so beautifully. I also co-authored a book, alongside my husband. This book is titled: "Fail Forward: Lessons we've learned the hard way, so that you don't have to". It's a compilation of life's tidbits, mainly for our own daughters who are growing into young adults, but also for any teenager who is learning how to navigate the joys and pangs of life. I live in southern California, with my husband, 2 daughters (one is officially a college student as of the 2025-26 school year), and dog.
