Prompts for Power Perspectives (Helpers)

Power dynamics exist everywhere, including your classroom. True inclusion requires a careful critique of our concepts of "helpers" and "the helped". Our students pick up on which students we value as helpers or mentors. All students benefit from opportunities to help another student AND opportunities to receive help and support from peers. Teaching style

I believe in high expectations and the power of compassion. My training has taught me to be vigilant for barriers in the learning environment and to apply a creative lens to diminish these barriers. All kinds of brains are capable of learning, communicating, and meeting goals. I seek to engender a sense of wonder and the ability to think critically whether I am working with children or adults. I teach with a strong social justice orientation, using anti-racist, antibias and inclusive methods.
