In this activity, students and teachers are directed to a website that has a wide variety of movie clips that reference math. For this particular activity, students watch a clip and answer the questions provided. This has been a really fun activity for my secondary math classes as a “rainy day” activity, a stress release during state/standardized testing, or emergency sub plan! You can spend as little or as much time on this activity as you and your students would like. Let’s hear it for Hollywo

Through this activity students will discover properties of parabolas while comparing the parabola they all carry around with them every day - their dental arch. Students will brainstorm ways to measure a dental arch and ultimately take an "impression" of their arch by taking a bite out of a slice of bread. Then they will trace their arch onto a graph, use the graph to generate a table of values, and then use the table to plug into an equation for the most "perfect" dental arch. Students love
We have heard the question so many times in our teaching career: “Why do I have to learn this stuff? I’m never going to use it in my life.” This thought provoking PowerPoint gives students the opportunity to think about some possible situations where they may use math in their lives and answer this ever common question.

Students are much more successful with solving basic introductory trigonometry problems when they spend time learning opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse and learning how to decide what trigonometric ratio to use when. This SMART Board notebook activity provides students the opportunity to practice this vocabulary. It also provides a 'pull tab' with answers. The activity ends with a little trigonometry comic relief.

My philosophy of teaching is to find different ways for students to learn. I believe it is important to show students that math does apply to the "real world" and that yes, indeed, math can be fun.
