STEM SCHOOL

This project is the first of many that my STEM students do at the very beginning of the year to practice the 6 elements of Collaboration we learned it that lesson. This bundle includes the lesson plan, 3 journal templates to add to their interactive journals, a card game, and the rubric for the final project.

This is the second lesson in my Structures unit. (Check out lesson one for FREE) This lesson includes a page for my student's interactive STEM notebook (sized to glue into a composition notebook) common core standards, and lesson dialogue.

This lesson is the introduction to the structure of bridges. This lesson includes the lesson dialogue, the student's interactive journal template, and a Prezi. The Prezi reviews that basic bridge terminology and forces at work on different types of bridges. The students will learn basic vocabulary terms and parts of bridges, and will write those definitions in addition to labeling them on some example bridge drawings.

This lesson is designed to pair with an online interactive lab on pbs.org. It explores what forces and loads are present in various kinds of structures. In addition it offers the opportunity to look at types of materials that are typically used to create a structure and the strengths and weakness of each.

The lesson briefly covers the history of catapults and then gives students an opportunity to build a catapult using the Engineering Design Process to create a design that meets the requirements.

This product teaches about the concept of relationships between variables by looking at data of inclined planes and the force required with different lengths. I use a great website called ASPIRE Simple and Complex Machines that allows students to manipulate an inclined plane and collect the data from each change. They will practice graphing that data and then analyzing it. This includes the lesson, standards met, interactive journal template, informational signs and sorting cards.

This lesson introduces the simple machine of a lever, helps students to learn to distinguish between the 3 classes of levers. It includes reading informational text, class discussion, group/partner work, and a building project.

This lesson follows the lesson where students had the opportunity to learn about loads, forces and materials in a structure. Now they are applying that knowledge and acting as Engineering Inspectors for their own School Building. A template is included for the STEM interactive notebook.

This lesson teaches the basics of loads and forces that a structure will need to bear. I use the interactive labs at pbs.org Building Big website to allow students to learn about these loads and forces in an engaging way. This bundle includes the student's journal template for their STEM interactive journal, common core and engineering standards, and Lesson Dialogue.

I begin this lesson with a paper/masking tape tower build challenge and end with a materials lab where they go to pbs.org "Building Big" Materials Lab and learn about the strengths and weaknesses of specific materials used in constructing structures. This bundle includes the template to be added to students interactive STEM journal, Common Core and Engineering standards met, lesson dialogue, and links to the online Materials Lab.

This lesson is an opportunity to focus on both Engineering and Literacy standards. The lesson is supported by an article titled Quake Proof Bridge from the December 9, 2013 issue of Scholastic Science World magazine. I have a copy of this article and can email it to you if you request it. This product includes the lesson dialogue, related video, and questions to accompany the article.

This is a diagram I use to help students understand how different celestial bodies are created and relationships between each. This diagram is slowly built as we progress from the very beginning of the universe: gas and dust, to the "life cycle of a star"--including just some of the possibilities such as creation of planetary nebulae, supernovae and black holes, the beginning of a planetary system, and how the universe is a cycle. First Lesson of an Engineering Unit called STRUCTURES. My students each have an STEM INTERACTIVE JOURNAL in a composition notebook so most of my lessons have templates that are designed to glue into that journal. **This free resource includes the common core standards, engineering standards, a Prezi presentation and the lesson dialogue.
