Making sure students understand the causes and effects of events in literature is imperative to comprehension and retention. They must understand how events are related and connected to understand deeper concepts like character motivation and point of view. This handout uses several key events in the first 5 chapters of The Hobbit. It allows you to easily see who understands the motivations of the characters, what causes them to embark on their adventure, and what pushes them to move forward.
