I have taught 5th-12th grade orchestra for 3 years in Colorado. I have been teaching private lessons for 9 years. I have a degree in K-12 Music Education, and I taught for String Project while in college.
Each year I do a beginner kick-off camp where I teach my brand new students as many of the basics as possible including: parts of the instrument, how to take care of the instrument, setting up posture, open strings, the ANT song, left hand fingers and hot cross buns. The students work through this packet during the camp. This would also be a great resource for getting through the basics in the first week of school.
Students fill out this form using the practice techniques. I use this for sub days because it helps guide the students into intentional practice instead of purely running the pieces while you are gone.
I went through how to use JWPepper with my 6th graders- starting with going to "String Orchestra," and showing them the different categories. We explored together as a class and listened to songs within the "Easy" and "Medium Easy" range (You can change this based on the group). The students found songs they liked and added them to the document. I will use these to gauge for what songs to buy next year, so they can enjoy the music they are playing!
