I’m an experience middle school science teacher with over 25 years in the classroom, teaching in both elementary and middle school settings. I’ve spent time diving into STEM, Technology, and Robotics, and I absolutely love bringing hands-on learning and tech into the curriculum.
These days, I’m an Instructional Tech Coach and VSTE Certified Coach, helping other teachers create student-centered, tech-friendly classrooms. I’m all about inquiry-based learning—giving students the tools and space to explore, ask questions, and grow at their own pace. Edible Atom Activity
Two page word document for students to create an edible atom. Students choose an element from the Periodic Table of Elements and identify the protons, neutrons, and electrons. Draw the atom then create a model of the atom using a cookie, icing, and M&M's.

This activity has students create models of molecules and compounds using gumdrops. Students practice describing the kinds and numbers of elements that make up a molecule of any compound. This activity would be completed after teaching the compunds and molecules notebook lesson.

Observation and Inferences Quiz
Two, short, 9 question quizzes to assess student's knowledge of qualitative and quantitative observations. Students must also read statements and determine if it is an observation or inference. All questions reference a cartoon at the top of the quizzes. Answer keys are inlcuded. This could also be used as a homework assignment or exit slip.

An exit slip for students to practice reading scientific equiment using metric measurements. Practice reading a metric ruler, graudated cylinder, triple beam balance, and thermometer. Requires students to identify the correct usage of the scientific equipment and its units.

A PowerPoint lesson on Earth's energy budget designed for 6th graders. There is a handout included for students to record notes from the presentation. Presentation covers how much solar enegy is reflected and absorbed in our atmosphere and why the energy budget needs to be balanced.

Students read a scenario and need to identify the independent variable, dependent variables, conrtol, and constant variables. Then students create a hypothesis. Students also interpret a data chart and create a graph based on the data identified. This is assignment is used to asses how well students understand the process of designing experiments and their knowledge of variables.

Greenhouse Effect Exit Slip
This can be used as and exit slip or warm up. Students are to explain what the greenhouse effect is in their own words. Draw the arrows on a picture to show how the greenhouse effect works. Finally, students are to explain in their own words the theory of global warming.

Biotic vs Abiotic
Homework assignment designed to assess students knowledge of biotic factors and abiotic factors, Students sort factors listed into the living or nonliving chart. Then they observe their backyard ecosstem and identify the biotic and abiotic factors. The final piece is a short writing assigment where they must infer what would happen to their backyard ecosystem if something happened to some of the factors.

Solar Energy Beads
Activity designed for pre-k students to teach them about solar energy. Have also used with my 6th graders. Students use energy beads and cover them with different SPF's to show how UV rays can affect us. After the activity, students have a cute braclet to wear and reminf them to wear sunscreen.

Peer Evaluation Rubric
Rubric designed for students to assess each other after completing group assignments. The rubric explains the expectations of the group members during the project and guidelines for completing the evaluation form. Students use the evaluation form to assess themselves and group members based on the rubric.

Identifying Variables Lab
A lab designed to show students how variables are used in an experiment. I use this when I am teaching what variables are and how they work in an experiment. This lab has students compare increasing amounts of clacium chloride with water temperature. Students also read the research and steps to create a hypothesis using If and Then. An answer key for the graph set up and experimental design is included. Sample answers for observations are also included.

Global Warming is Hot Stuff!
This is an assignemnt that uses reciprocal teaching. Studenta read an article on the theory of global warming and create a quiz for another students. This lesson also allows for differentiation because students can create very eays or more challenging questions. There are two sample questions to show this to students.

Scale Model and Ratio Practice
Worksheet and hands on activity to practice visualizing scale models and ratios. I use this in my science class when teaching about scale models, but this could easily be used when teaching ratios in math class. Students are recreating 5 shapes with poster paper. They must interpret the model shape, figure out the ratio of the scale model, then create the model. This is also a good review of using a ruler.

Phases of the Oreo - Moon Phases
Hands on activity to review the phases of the moon using oreo cookies. Activity includes a printable vocabulary review. Also included is a printable student sheet to be used to draw and label the phases of the moon as they create them on the oreo cookies.
