After teaching students the difference between a thin (yes, no) question and a thick question (answered by deep thinking), I challenge my students to come up with both thick and thin questions nightly as part of their reading homework in response to their reading.

This nightly reading log requires students to read 15 minutes nightly and then analyze a non-literal phrase. Texts with non-literal phrases are needed for this assignment.
This Graphic organizer requires students to identify the main idea of two separate texts or chapters with supporting details and then compare/contrast them.
After students have been taught to successfully write a hamburger opinion paragraph, they can choose one of these three juicy opinion topics to show you their skills!
After nightly reading, students will write the "facts" regarding their reading ie: title and minutes read. They will then state a brief opinion of the selection they read.
This product requires students to compare and contrast two characters every night after reading. They can use any literary text with two or more characters.
Working on text connections in class? Give students practice making text connections with texts they read for homework. There is an example listed. This product is also bilingual! English and Spanish!
I give students copies of "Teach us Amelia Bedelia" and challenge them to find the non-literal language in the text and write what the text really means.
After I teach context clues, I have students read a text with at least a few words they aren't familiar with. They then jot the unknown words down and use context clues to determine meaning.
This template can be used by students to write any informative report.
