After teaching students the difference between a thin (yes, no) question and a thick question (answered by deep thinking), I challenge my students to come up with both thick and thin questions nightly as part of their reading homework in response to their reading.

Have students track their reading over spring break by coloring a decoration for every 20 minutes read! If they fill in all the decorations, they win a Popsicle party!

This resource provides students with a variety of standards based activities to complete for homework. Students love that they are able to choose, and don't have to do the same activity every night.

Homework: Students read a fiction text for 15 minutes nightly. They then identify the parts of the text.

This nightly reading log requires students to read 15 minutes nightly and then analyze a non-literal phrase. Texts with non-literal phrases are needed for this assignment.

After learning about narratives, I have students write short narratives nightly based on the reading they did.

This product requires students to write 3 key details from their nightly reading and then identify the main idea of the selection that they read.

After nightly reading, students will write the "facts" regarding their reading ie: title and minutes read. They will then state a brief opinion of the selection they read.

This product requires students to compare and contrast two characters every night after reading. They can use any literary text with two or more characters.

This sheet requires students to analyze a character with their reading nightly for homework. It can be use with any literary text.

Working on text connections in class? Give students practice making text connections with texts they read for homework. There is an example listed. This product is also bilingual! English and Spanish!

I laminate and glue this sheet onto a folder so I have a place to keep the work missed by absent students. I use dry erase marker to write their name and due date.
