My first year of teaching was 7th grade science in Waco, Texas. Then I got married and moved to Virginia, where I taught 7th/8th grade mathematics (pre-algebra) for 12 years in and out of a collaborative model. I then taught 6th grade math virtually. Now I'm a 6-8 math interventionist in Tennessee (and loving it!).
This activity gets the students up out of their seats and helps them learn to recognize and name the properties of operations. The properties included are the commutative, associative, identity, inverse, zero product, and distributive.
Groups of students get a set of cards with the different words used to create the names of the properties. The teacher presents an example of a property. The students must hold a word and line themselves up to create the correct name. Points can be awarded fo
Make ordering integers more fun and entertaining! Included are 4 pages of integers from -24 to 23 with an additional page of absolute value. There are also 2 pages of instructions so you can snapshot to your presentation or print out for your students. It's the same rules! You might also find somethin
Join the GEMDAS revolution! This poster breaks apart the pieces of GEMDAS into the 4 steps used to simplify an expression. My hope is to replace PEMDAS in all grades and schools in America.

Need a fun way to compare rational numbers? Try the game of War! It provides a quick, entertaining way to compare rational numbers. This resource gives you 48 rational number cards with an additional 12 cards with absolute value. Also included are directions pages that you can snapshot to your presentation or print out for students. Some education standards emphasize representing equations with manipulatives, like algebra tiles. This worksheet is one way to assess whether students understand how to solve a 2-step equation using those tiles. Students simply draw the tiles onto a balance to represent the steps required for solving an equation. This sheet is doesn't have an equation written in it because you might want to use it multiple times. I have, however, included an example sheet, in case you're curious about what a
Do your students need more reinforcement for the order of operations (GEMDAS)? This might be a worksheet for you! It assigns colors to the different steps of the order of operations so each step is highlighted by a color.
I used this in the beginning of my career when my students didn't have to complete very difficult order of operation puzzles. I think it's very useful to add color to what is normally black and white!
My coworkers and I have embarked on a mission to change PEMDAS to GEMDAS since the upper levels of math include more than just parentheses as a grouping symbol. That being said, I made this KWL chart to use with my 8th grade students to introduce the new anagram. It was a great conversation!
When I teach the order of operations, I spend a couple of days just focusing on the order rather than the answer. For this activity, I print out a set of cards for a group of 4-5 students. I put a problem on the board and the students must line themselves up with cards in their hands that indicate the order needed to solve the problem. You can either go to the next problem or let them solve the problem using the order they indicated.
This is a short, 5-question exit pass that requires students to compare some numbers and order others. There are two copies on one sheet so paper isn't wasted.

Experience
My first year of teaching was 7th grade science in Waco, Texas. Then I got married and moved to Virginia, where I taught 7th/8th grade mathematics (pre-algebra) for 12 years in and out of a collaborative model. I then taught 6th grade math virtually. Teaching style
I prefer hands-on, discovery learning with lots of discussion, activity, and analysis. I'm a big fan of Jo Boaler and standards-based grading, so I prefer collaboration over lectures.
Awards & shining teacher moments
My principal has honored me with the Starfish Award for going above and beyond my duties.
I have also been awarded Teacher of The Week by current and former students.
My own education history
I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. I am certified to teach grades 4-8 in math and science in Texas, grades 6-8 mathematics/science and Algebra in Virginia and Tennessee, and I hold a Master of Education in School Leadership.
Additional biographical information
I have led professional development on creating a positive relationship with middle school students. I also created the activities and worksheets we used in our 7th/8th grade math curriculum. As a math interventionist, I use small groups and collaboration to address learning gaps and misunderstandings.
