Colorful graphics make this poster an added attraction to any classroom for visual reminders for all students of the distinction between various punctuation marks and why they are used. Confusion always seems to surround the difference between commas, colons, and semi colons. What else can a teacher do, but provide clarification through practices involving warmups and hands on writing activities. Exploratory searches within engaging texts can provide another answer to discovery while providing s

Students need to be able to determine the affixes of a word in order to determine the meaning if context clues are not useful. As a learner of English most of my ESL students found pictures to be helpful in retaining information as it relates to the materials provided. This poster provides those graphics needed to not only learn the basics of some English punctuation, but also to relate it to real life. The English teacher could conceivably put together a whole lesson on the implicated ideas brainstormed by students in writing a story, poem, or even in drawing their own picture related to the information provided on the

My own education history

I have recently received a Masters of Arts in Secondary Education with an emphasis and certification in English for grades 4-12. Student teaching involved teaching ELL students both reading comprehension skills as well as writing for the purpose of test preparation for exit level TAKS standardized tests.

Additional biographical information

After discovering my love for teaching from years of teaching my own children all core subjects through integrated learning, I began to substitute teach all grade levels. As I observed both as a substitute teacher and as a student teacher I noticed that many students were struggling with both reading and writing. Through focused lesson plans that include modifications for special needs children I have been able to teach even the most disadvantaged students the basics of reading comprehension and writing through hands on lessons for all grade levels. Just as swimmers must learn one part of a stroke at a time before mastering the coordination required to swim and not sink, so must English students learn one writing and reading skill at a time. My approach to teaching writing is to teach both word and sentence structure while using key words from literature to compose paragraphs. This enables my students to focus on sentence structure before taking on the task of paragraph composition in its entirety. For reading I have used the Spalding method within the lower grade levels, which enables my students to read any word through this well-established phonics method. Within the secondary grade levels I have emphasized strategies that enable students to identify the meaning of words through both context clues and decoding. I have developed numerous graphic organizers which are also set up in a step by step method for learning various strategies for successful reading comprehension.
