Solfege Worksheet

It always seems like my students know how to sing a scale in Solfege, but after that, they really don't seem to have much of a sense of how to use it. I designed this worksheet to teach them that those syllables have a name: Solfege, and I wanted them to have a way to apply the Solfege syllables to an actual melody. At the end, there is an optional Melodic Dictation Assessment, which can be used a lot of different ways.

Opera History Presentation (BRIEF!) with an Oral Review, and a Written Quiz

This PowerPoint and the Assessments herein attempt to make learning about Opera History fun and interesting by engaging students with fun animation, colorful slides and read-along pages that can be printed or simply projected so you can read it aloud to the students, or they can read it aloud from a screen to each other. It gives a very brief history of the beginning of opera, explains what Overture, Recitative and Arias are, talks a bit about basics of opera plots and voice parts. There is al

Music History for kids

This is a PowerPoint presentation that I made to sort of outline the basics of the five periods of music history that I decided to focus on in my classroom: 1. Gregorian Chant 2. Renaissance 3. Baroque 4. Classical 5. Romantic There are a few slides per each period, and the Gregorian, Renaissance, and Baroque slides each end with one slide that has a version of "Hot Cross Buns" in the style of that particular musical period. (But if your kids aren't big on recorder, you can absolutely skip thos

Key Signatures, Solfege in G-Major, Moveable Do Explanation Introduction

Explaining to my students what a Key Signature is and why we need it, and why the F has to be sharp in the Key of G has always been something that I've had trouble explaining without using a lot of visual aids and going through the thought process of why a note would have to stay sharp in order to make the G-Major scale sound correct. Mostly, I want my students to come away with an understanding of why F is sharp in the key of G without overwhelming them in the details of whole and half steps

Instruments of the Orchestra- Presentation, Oral Quiz and Jeopardy Game

This is a PowerPoint Presentation that starts with a review of the instruments of the orchestra. It discusses what instruments are in the Instrument Families and how each Instrument Family makes sound. Then there's a "Pop Quiz" with animated slides, where a question pops up, and then the answer pops up. Then, there is a Jeopardy Game that allows the students to work in groups as teams to review what they've learned. (I've found that having five teams works best.) This allows you to Assess wh

Nutcracker Story Book in Power Point

I wanted to read my students the story of The Nutcracker, so I put together this Power Point Presentation with Clip art, and photographs that I found online to illustrate different parts of the story. I loved that, since it was a projected image on a Smart Board, rather than a book, I could have the older students take turns reading it, while the rest of the class read along, rather than reading it or explaining the story myself. Vocal rest is a beautiful thing when you're teaching!

Rhythm worksheet - Quarter, Paired Eighth, and Half notes - Good for SUBS!!

This is a very basic and rudimentary worksheet that can be done to either instruct or asses rhythms of quarter notes, pairs of eighth notes, and half notes. I designed it to be simple for anyone to follow - including a substitute teacher. The first page asks students to trace notes within a graphic organizer. The second page asks students to write them on their own. It's an editable power point, so if you want to make it more complicated, you can absolutely do that! I refer to the notes as Ta, T

Written Test and Review on the Instruments of the Orchestra

I created a test in the first slide of this Power Point Presentation. (I put it in the first slide so you could see the thumbnails of both sides of the test on this website, but when you actually give the test, you would have to move those two slides down to the bottom of the PowerPoint Presentation.) There is a review of the questions on the test, and on the back side of the Instrument Test, there is a written assessment that you can use as a Assessment or Pre-Assessment for reading the note

December Songs and Poems

This is a collection of Songs and Poems for very young children about December, Winter and Snow. A lot of them are songs with lyrics that are set to familiar kids' songs (like Up on the Housetop, and I'm a Little Tea Pot). I tried to alternate between a song and a poem, though this didn't always work. I found a lot of these on the internet, I wrote some of them myself, and some of them were written with the help of my students in my own General Music Classroom. I hope you enjoy them!

Nutcracker Listening Maps and Choreography

These are a series of dances that are choreographed for children aged Pre-K - 6th grade, set to four pieces from The Nutcracker Suite. There are graphic representations for the dance moves to make it easy to follow, as well as for the formations if necessary. There are three Listening Maps as well. Chinese Tea doesn't have a listening map - just pictures of the instruments the students are supposed to be listening for as they dance. Chinese Tea: Pre-K - 2nd Grade March: 1st Grade - 3rd Gra

Beginning Composing and Harmonizing on Recorder with songs using B, A, G, and E

This Power Point Presentation consists of nine songs for recorder on B, A, G, and E. Some of them are original (you can see the complete listing of songs on the Title Page of the PPT in the thumbnails.) so you'll get fresh new stuff you and your students have never seen before! Two of them are self-composed pieces, and the last one is a Duet with two different melodies that harmonize with each other that's all on B, A, G, and E. This was designed for teaching 3rd graders to start writing their

Music Literacy FLASH Game - so much fun!

It's like flash cards, but you project these slides onto the board, and the students either answer them as a whole class or you can use this as a SUPER FUN team game! My kids love doing this! I made this with fun animation and the answers are included in an animation on each slide so the kids see the answers right away and you don't have to be the one to deliver the bad news that a student, or group, got the wrong answer. (I created this when I had laryngitis, and had to do as little talking as

Writing an AB Form Composition

I wanted my students to write simple AB form compositions for their recorder tests instead of me just handing them a recorder piece and telling them to play it - I wanted every kid to write their own song in AB form with the theme of opposites! This Power Point guides students and the teacher through the process of coming up with a topic for opposites, writing lyrics, and then specific guidelines for writing a song about them that they will be able to play on their recorder! You could also do t

2-Measure Composition and Sight Singing Exercise

I used this worksheet to have the students get in pairs and compose a short 2-measure melody. The rubric for the composition is at the top of the paper. It was then sight sung by another pair of students who would be graded for how well they sung it. The worksheet is designed to be cut into three pieces for paper conservation. Each pair of students write the melody in a given amount of time. (I would give them two minutes) They then exchange papers with another pair of students, who grades

Composing Chords for Beginners in the Key of G

Someone once told me when I was first learning what chords were that they looked like snowmen. Having that familiar visual to hang on to when I was learning about this complicated subject was incredibly helpful! So I decided to keep using it when I became a teacher. I designed this for fourth graders, but Chord Composition is something that I don't remember learning in the school system that I grew up in until high school, so I figured it's appropriate for all age ranges. About the store

Experience

I've been teaching public school for 10 years, and private for 1 year.

Teaching style

Strongest in incorporating music literacy into games and activities for grades 1-3, so that children are learning to read notes on the staff long before they begin having to read music to play a musical instrument. I love making sure that my students in grades 4-6 have a chance to use Chord Progressions and fully understand Time Signatures. I also start teaching sight singing in first grade so that by the time they start chorus, they have at least started to understand the basics of melodic contour, if not the ability to read entire phrases by sight.
