I have been teaching for 11 years; the first year in technology and the last ten have been in 5th grade. I really enjoy the interaction with the students. I always say that in 5th grade the students are mature enough to have a great discussion, but still young enough to like stickers. They
keep me young and sometimes I feel like I'm the one learning.
I teach all subjects and spend much of my time free researching and creating lessons that will continue to challenge and motivate my students and follow the common core standards. The biggest compliment for me is when I share my work with my colleagues and they actually use it and like it.
Reading is BIG in my classroom! We are always busy reading, whether it is shared, guided, independent, read-a-louds, or literature circles. My goal each year is to try to convert the non-readers into lovers of literature

Magazine/Newspaper Article Analysis
Use this worksheet to determine the main idea of an informational/expository text. I use this with my “Time for Kids” magazine weekly. The first day I introduce how to write a “Gist Summary” (a 20-word summary) and then on the following day I explain and model how to fill out the analysis form using the main article of the magazine. This worksheet is a good way to address text structure and look closely at an article.
