Probability Game- Make Your Own!

This is an activity for students to complete following a unit of study on probability. It also fits well with reinforcement on concepts you breezed past with test prep. Students will design their own probability game. They must: -plan their game, rules, and essential question -customize a data sheet to fit the needs of their game -apply key vocabulary used during the probability unit to their essential questions This activity is for your class if: -you want to reinforce the unit of study in

Inferring using Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

This is an application activity that you may chose to complete after doing a lesson on inferring. Whether you are doing the book as a read aloud or in small groups, this is a small and practical way to have students individually apply their understanding of the concept in a meaningful way.

Editing and Revising Checklist in Writer's Workshop

This checklist is a tool for students to use to edit and revise their work in writer's workshop. It encourages them to read through their writing and look for specific features in their piece that need to be examined before they publish it. It also has them color code for capitalization and punctuation. I found this very useful in holding students accountable for coming prepared to a conference. It made my conference time more efficient and also allowed me to see if students could identify punc

Character Traits with drawing space

This is a reader's response that reinforces providing evidence from the text to support a selected character trait. Not only is this a great tool for mini lessons... it also ties in nicely with written and oral reading assessments. If you have a class of artists, this page is for you. It provides a small space to draw the character, and have students brainstorm a character trait while they are constructing their character and adding details.

Summarize a Book

This document is a 1-page reader's response I use during reading workshop. It holds students accountable for summarizing their reading and also includes a graphic organizer to help them brainstorm before constructing their response. It can be used for a short picture book, or a longer chapter book. The Beginning, Middle, End boxes on the top lend themselves to brainstorming with students still developing a sense of sequence in their reading. It has suggested language for transition words as wel

Student Information Sheet- Back to School (Intermediate)

This is a sheet that I have parents fill out at the start of each school year to keep phone numbers and contact info all in one place. It is also great to have if you organize student data all in once place. This way, if you need to contact home, and mom/dad have a question about other data, it is all in one neat and tidy place.

Teaching style

Engage students..at every level. Find a way to hook them. Be explicit what introducing a new concept of study but give them room to explore new content for them to make it meaningful. If you are having fun and immersing yourself alongside the students, it will be contagious.
