Identifying Biomes from Climatograms

In this activity, students identify biomes by creating climatograms using real climate data from cities around the world and assessing the use of climatograms as an effective tool by scientists. This activity is perfect for AP Environmental Science students and can be modified for lower-level classes. Answer key included. Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to provide practice in creating and reading climatograms/climatographs expressed through monthly averages of temperature and precipita

Deforestation and Biogeochemical Cycles Lab

In this lab activity, students explore how the removal of trees and plants affects the biogeochemical cycles of forested ecosystems. Students measure water-holding capacity, nitrates, and phosphates found in water runoff from three different simulated environments: forested, mulched, and clearcut. Includes analysis of scientific real-world scientific data. Includes guide, answer key, and lab handout as a PDF and Word doc. Learning Target: I can explain how changes in the environment affect the

Energy Flow & Cycling of Matter in Ecosystems Unit Project

This project incorporates everything learned about matter cycling, energy cycling, food webs, and biomes into one culminating project. Students will observe an ecosystem, take their own pictures, and design a presentation about their ecosystem which includes a description of the ecosystem, animals and plants they observed, which biome their ecosystem is in, how matter cycles through it, and how the plants and animals and a decomposer interact in the ecosystem by creating a food web. This documen

Sustainable Energy Plan Unit Project

For this project, students will write and present a sustainable energy proposal for their city to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while meeting their city’s energy needs. Students must research their city's energy use and sources, devise a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels with greener energy sources, find the best locations for new power plants, propose funding sources, and run a cost/benefit analysis to justify their choices. This project is designed for upper-cl

Stability and Change in Ecosystems Unit Project

In this culminating unit project, students will combine what they have learned about climate change and biodiversity to create a Google Site for a fictional non-profit charged with saving a species that has become endangered due to climate change. This assignment can be easily adapted between states or can be turned into a more global-minded project. Students have to describe their species, explain how climate change has contributed to it becoming endangered or threatened, explain climate change

Modeling Photosynthesis- Analysis Worksheet

This activity is broken into 4 tasks. In Task 1 students write the equation for photosynthesis and explain what would happen to the reaction if you changed the reactants. In Task 2, students draw the steps of photosynthesis and answer questions regarding the overall process. In Task 3, students rewrite common misconceptions about photosynthesis, before analyzing scientific data in Task 4. The tasks get progressively more complex, requiring students to use critical thinking and analysis. Learnin

Ecosystem Services Notes

This two-paged chart includes the different types of ecosystem services and asks students to identify the ecosystem services provided by different ecosystems, including wetlands, forests, mangroves, and grassland/rangelands.

Design Thinking Rubric

This Design Thinking rubric uses the "Approaching, Met, Mastered" rubric approach, with only the "Meeting the Standard" section completed. Students are graded on the Design Thinking steps (empathy, define, ideate, prototype, test, and tell) and soft skills. The rubric is completely editable and offers links to explain evidence types, offer suggestions for evidence, or explain design thinking terminology for clarification. Design Thinking is a process centered around creative problem-solving. It

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching for almost a decade.

Teaching style

I focus on student-centered, inquiry-based learning around anchoring scientific phenomena.

My own education history

I have a Bachelor's in Evolutionary Biology, a Masters in Teaching, as well as certifications in Gifted and AP. Prior to becoming a teaching I worked as a paleontologist intern at a local museum and as a research assistant at Joseph Jones Ecological Research Center where I studies long-leaf pine ecosystems. I am also a published paleontologist where my research focused on functional morphology of theropod dinosaurs.
