I have been teaching kindergarten for 12 years in a rural public school. Our district will be entering the 5th year of using the Literacy Collaborative Framework. This has involved hours and hours of professional development and many coaching sessions to help me and fellow teachers create a literacy rich environment for our students. Keep parents informed and students motivated as you have students color in how many Class Dojo points they earn each day. When they reach a star, they have earned a prize of your choosing. Students remain focused on their own progress as they become excited to track how close they are to reaching their next prize. Students can keep this chart in their home-school folder for daily use.

Provide parents with this guide to help them support their child when reading at home. Prompts provided will help students improve their word solving, meaning, and fluency. On the back side parents can ask sample questions before, during, and after reading a book with their child. This is a great tool to send home or to keep in a guided reading envelope or take-home folder.

I created this memory book as a gift to give students at the end of our school year. This memory book combines student work samples (writing/illustrating) as well as photos taken by the teacher to create a unique and very special keepsake! Parents will love looking back through these pages to see first hand just how much their child grew during his/her year in kindergarten. Memory book pages are completed gradually, typically one per month.

Pop-It CVC Word Center Activity

This is a hands-on, low-prep, activity for your literacy centers. Students are highly engaged as they are able to use a pop-it to complete this activity. Students pull cvc word cards and read it, spell it, pop-it, write 3 of the words read and illustrate those words as well. Items needed: 1. Alphabet Pop-It (I made my own using Dollar Tree Pop-Its). 2. Provided CVC Word Cards (I'd suggest printing them on card stock and different colors for each vowel will allow you to

Experience

I have been teaching kindergarten for 12 years in a rural public school. Our district will be entering the 5th year of using the Literacy Collaborative Framework. This has involved hours and hours of professional development and many coaching sessions to help me and fellow teachers create a literacy rich environment for our students. This is based on the work of Fountas and Pinnell.

Teaching style

I have been told that I have a "thespian quality" to my teaching style. I use many chants, songs, and movements with my students to make new concepts easier to retain. I love making cross-curricular connections for my students and tend to use thematic units to help with this. I love using good literature (read-aloud) to springboard most of my day's activities.

My own education history

I earned my bachelors in early-childhood education (pre-k -3) from Youngstown State University along with a reading endorsement. I later earned my masters degree from the University of Akron with an endorsement in instructional technology.

Additional biographical information

I am also a mom of two young girls and love watching them learn and grow! :)
