CNN10 is an amazing resource to use to incorporate current events. If you're not familiar with CNN10, you can read more about how to use it in your class here. If you devote class time to watching a video, or if you assign it as a standard homework assignment, you're probably going to want to use some class time to debrief and discuss the video. Rubric for One Paragraph Explanatory Writing Assignment

This is a simple rubric that I use for simple explanatory writing assignments that are one paragraph in length. We have to do a lot of these in my school in order to prepare our students for the PARCC test, and they roughly follow the premise of a system like RACE (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain) or CER (Claim, Evidence, Reason). I've also shrunk and duplicated the rubric on the page, because our administrators want us to attach rubrics to each assignment before filing them in student folders or

Powerpoint to Teach Gerrymandering with Mapmaker the Game

This resource is a powerpoint designed to help you teach gerrymandering with Mapmaker: the Gerrymandering game. Gerrymandering is a critical topic and extremely relevant today. But it's also abstract, and it can be hard to get students to understand what it means for political maps to be drawn in ways that favor one political party over another. Mapmaker: the Gerrymandering game is a board game that is based on the idea of gerrymandering, and it can be a great way to make this abstract topic mor

About the store

Experience

I've been a high school social studies teacher in East Orange since 2007. In that time, I've taught the gamut of high school courses - World History, Early U.S. History, Modern U.S. History, and AP Government. I've participated in several curriculum writing committees and written assessments for my department. I also worked at C-SPAN as a Teacher Fellow and a Senior Fellow.

Teaching style

My teaching style is one in which the onus is on the students to do the work that produces their learning. While I'm comfortable talking in front of a group for hours on end, I know that that doesn't really help students learn. I prefer to create independent or group assignments that make students read, write, and problem solve. I prefer to do this with technology, and I have at times had the luxury of teaching in a computer lab. Usually my classes involve a mix of mini-lectures, reading and writing, and summative projects. I'm also a huge fan of current events, and I try to incorporate them on a regular basis in my class. I love using CNN 10 to teach current events and I will happily make time for it in my classroom.

My own education history

I studied at Rutgers University, where I earned a BA in Political Science and an EdM in Social Studies Education. I returned to Rutgers to pursue an EdD in Social Studies Education, but I stopped work on my doctorate and I'm currently ABD.

Additional biographical information

I am a passionate advocate for civics education and I write a blog on the topic, The Civic Educator. There, I share resources and methods for civics teachers and I also explore policies that can help us improve civics education.
